Interpreters at immigration offices

Even in a fine-settlement matter, the person should understand the allegation and the consequences of paying the fine, because an admission can affect records and future visa or work-permit applications. An interpreter allows that decision to be made on accurate information.

Officers generally allow an applicant to be accompanied by an interpreter, particularly for dependent-visa interviews or where details must be explained. Bring a copy of the interpreter's identification, and note that each office applies its own discretion.

Most forms are Thai or bilingual, and an interpreter can explain each field, but the applicant must sign personally to certify the content. Inaccurate entries affect the assessment and may be treated as false information.

It is strongly advisable. You need to understand the explanation being recorded, the fine, and the effect on future entry to Thailand. Signing documents you do not understand can cost you the chance to put favourable facts on record.

They help with extension-of-stay interviews based on marriage or supporting a child, explanations in overstay cases, answering officers during residence verification visits, and completing forms that exist only in Thai. Interpreting keeps answers responsive and consistent with the filed documents, which is where applications are commonly bounced. An interpreter is not a legal representative and cannot answer on your behalf; for complex histories such as a prior refusal, attend with a lawyer as well.

Requirements differ by mission. Some keep an approved list and accept only those names; others accept an independent interpreter you bring but ask for identity documents and language credentials. Check the consular section's filing guidance or ask directly before the appointment, and line up a second interpreter as backup, because an interpreter rejected on the day can push the interview back by several weeks.

Most often when giving statements for a dependant visa application, explaining a late residence notification, attending a spousal interview for an extension of stay based on marriage, or explaining an overstay. The interpreter helps ensure the recorded statement matches the facts and does not contradict the filed documents. An interpreter is not a filing agent: the applicant must still appear in person and sign as the officer directs.

Under sections 13 and 13/1 of the Criminal Procedure Code, an interpreter must be provided when a suspect or witness does not understand Thai, and must affirm that the rendering is truthful and complete. The investigating officer records the interpreter's name in the case file, and stations usually ask for the interpreter's ID or passport plus evidence of experience in that language pair.

It depends on the office. Matters requiring identity verification and signatures in person, such as district office registration or a Land Department transfer, normally need the interpreter physically present. Consultations, case preparation interviews, and meetings with overseas counterparties work well remotely.

Some offices accept it for non-contentious matters, but many refuse anyone with an interest in the case because impartiality is at risk. For interviews, civil status registration, and juristic acts, use an independent interpreter.

Many embassies do not admit third parties, and some supply their own interpreter, so check that mission's rules first. What an interpreter can always help with is rehearsing questions, preparing document explanations, and checking that form entries are consistent.
