Interpreters at embassies, consulates and the Department of Consular Affairs
Appointments for affirmations and single-status letters, swearing before embassy officers, submitting documents for legalisation at the Department of Consular Affairs, and the difference between spoken interpreting and certified translation.
What must foreign documents go through before being filed at a district office?
Generally certification in the country of origin and by the relevant embassy, translation into Thai, then certification of the translation by the Department of Consular Affairs before filing with the registrar. When the Apostille Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027, the foreign-side chain shortens, but the Thai translation is still required.
Does signing a power of attorney for a transfer require an interpreter?
On the day of signing, the grantor must understand the scope of authority granted. If signed abroad, it normally needs certification at a Thai embassy or by a local notary plus legalisation by the Department of Consular Affairs; on the registration day the attorney acts on the grantor's behalf.
What is the difference between an interpreter and a certified translator?
An interpreter works orally at the event; a certified translator signs to certify a written translation. Some receiving authorities want both — an interpreter at signing and a certified translation attached to the document.
Do I need an interpreter at an embassy appointment for a single-status letter?
It depends on the embassy: some have Thai-speaking staff, others require the applicant to affirm in English. If unsure, bring an interpreter and check the appointment conditions on that embassy's website in advance.
Will the Department of Consular Affairs accept a translation by any translator?
Consular legalisation certifies the signature of the competent officer or the correctness of the translation under the department's own criteria. The translator should sign the translation with contact details, and the translation must match the original in every detail, including figures, dates and name spellings.
Once Thailand joins the Apostille Convention, are interpreters and translations still needed?
Yes. The Apostille, which enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027, authenticates a signature and seal only — it does not certify content and does not replace a translation. The receiving authority will still require a translation into its official language.
How does interpreting at a police station differ from interpreting in court?
At the investigation stage the inquiry officer arranges or approves the interpreter under Criminal Procedure Code section 13, and the rendered answers are recorded in the statement that later becomes evidence. In court the interpreter takes an oath or affirmation before serving and renders speech consecutively so that it appears in the record of proceedings. The practical difference is that court renderings can be challenged on the spot by opposing counsel, so experience with the same case type matters more there.
Does the interpreter also certify translations of supporting documents?
No. Interpreting covers the spoken exchange at the event. Documents filed with an authority need a separate written translation with its own certification. For the Department of Consular Affairs the translation must be in the format its Legalization Division accepts; for courts or foreign counterparties a translator's declaration plus signature certification may be needed. Budget and schedule the two separately: interpreting on the day, and certified translation of the paperwork.
Is an interpreter the same as a certified translator?
They are different roles even where one person does both. Interpreting is real-time and measured by the accuracy of communication in the room. Certified translation works on the text and is measured by fidelity to the source, which can be checked afterwards. Receiving authorities often set separate requirements, accepting translations only from translators with specific credentials while accepting any adult as an interpreter, so check both requirements independently.
Can an interpreter also certify my document translation?
Interpreting is oral; certified translation is a written product that needs a translator's certification and sometimes translation certification at the Department of Consular Affairs. One provider may do both, but the outputs are separate documents because receiving authorities check the certification format differently.
Can I bring an interpreter to an embassy visa interview?
Many embassies do not admit third parties, and some supply their own interpreter, so check that mission's rules first. What an interpreter can always help with is rehearsing questions, preparing document explanations, and checking that form entries are consistent.
