Medical interpreting in hospitals

Informed consent before treatment, explaining results and medical certificates, insurance claims, and confidentiality of health data under Thailand's PDPA.

Do prenuptial or postnuptial agreements need to be translated?

The parties must genuinely understand the text. If drafted in Thai and the foreign spouse does not read Thai, prepare a bilingual counterpart and have an interpreter explain it before the registrar; otherwise consent can be contested later.

Do Thai hospitals provide interpreters?

Large private hospitals in tourist areas often have interpreter desks for major languages such as English, Chinese, Russian and Arabic. Public hospitals usually do not have staff interpreters, so patients should arrange their own for surgery, consent forms and treatment planning.

Should I sign a Thai-language consent form I do not understand?

No. Informed consent is fundamental: you may ask for risks, alternatives and costs to be explained until you understand before signing. The interpreter should render the doctor's explanation in full, without abridging it.

Must a medical interpreter keep patient information confidential?

Yes. Health data is sensitive personal data under the Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562, and disclosure to third parties requires a legal basis or the patient's consent. Professional interpreters will sign a confidentiality undertaking on request.

How do I arrange an interpreter, and what does it cost?

Send us the language, date and time, venue, type of engagement (court, police, district office, land office, immigration, hospital or business) and the relevant documents by phone, LINE or email. Our staff will confirm interpreter availability and quote the fee for that engagement type and duration before the work starts.

How necessary is an interpreter for a condominium transfer at the land office?

Very. The land officer must confirm both parties understand and consent before registering the transfer. Where a buyer or seller does not understand Thai, officers usually will not proceed until an interpreter attends and signs to certify the interpretation. On the day this covers the sale agreement (Tor Dor 13), the debt-free certificate, the fees and taxes, and the 49% foreign quota position. It also reduces later disputes about the validity of the transaction.

Can I use a remote interpreter over Zoom or phone instead of one in the room?

For business meetings, some hospital appointments, initial bank conversations and pre-appointment briefings, yes. For anything where the interpreter must certify the interpretation in front of an official — court, district office, land office, police investigation — attendance in person is normally required, because the official checks the interpreter's ID and takes their signature. If in doubt, confirm with the receiving office in advance and keep an in-person interpreter as backup.

What can a medical interpreter do, and what are the limits?

They make history-taking, explanation of results, informed consent before surgery, and medical certificates for insurance claims accurate, which reduces the risk of a patient consenting without understanding the risks. The limits matter: an interpreter is not a clinician, so they do not diagnose, advise on treatment, or decide for the patient. Clinical questions go back to the doctor. Health data is sensitive personal data under the PDPA, so strict confidentiality applies.

How many interpreters does a Thai district office require for a marriage registration?

At least one interpreter is required whenever either party does not understand Thai, because the registrar must be satisfied that both parties understand the register entry and consent freely. The interpreter must be of legal age, present an original ID card or passport, should not be a party or have a financial interest in the couple's property, and must sign the interpreter field alongside two witnesses. Some districts also ask for a short written statement confirming the entry was read out and explained in full.

What should be given to the interpreter in advance?

Send key documents one to two days ahead: the complaint or recorded statement, the disputed contract, a list of parties and witnesses, industry or medical terminology, and the spelling of proper names. Where sensitive data is involved, cover it with a confidentiality undertaking consistent with the Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562. Preparation reduces mid-hearing clarifications, shortens the session, and lowers the risk that a rendering goes wrong on a decisive point.

Can a medical interpreter cover legal work and vice versa?

They substitute poorly because the vocabulary and the risk profile differ. Medical interpreting demands precision on drug names, dosages, procedure names and risk disclosures in consent forms, where errors affect patient safety directly. Legal interpreting demands precision on binding terms such as consent, acknowledgement of debt, or waiver of rights. Where a hospital signing also carries liability questions, use an interpreter with experience in both settings.

Which languages are most requested in Phuket and the Andaman coast?

English, Russian, Mandarin, German, French and the Scandinavian languages are requested most, followed by Arabic, Korean, Japanese and Eastern European languages. The most common settings are marriage registration, statements to inquiry officers after road and marine accidents, condominium sale signings, and negotiations with insurers at hospitals. Book rarer languages at least a week ahead because the pool of available interpreters is small.

Do I need different interpreters for filings and for court hearings?

Not always, but court work is more demanding because testimony is rendered consecutively and opposing counsel may challenge the interpreter's competence. For cases with financial or medical terminology, choose an interpreter with that subject experience and send the case documents in advance.

How does medical interpreting differ from general interpreting?

It requires familiarity with drug names, procedures, and the risk wording in consent forms, because errors affect a patient's decision. Ask the hospital for the consent form and case summary in advance, and confirm with the physician that rendering will be sentence by sentence.
