How much health cover does a Non-O-A visa require?
Read the notification in force on your filing date, because the figures have changed more than once. The earlier condition was outpatient cover of at least THB 40,000 and inpatient cover of at least THB 400,000; a later notification set total cover of not less than USD 100,000. Check the requirement published by the Thai embassy or consulate-general handling your application and by the Immigration Bureau at immigration.go.th, since officers compare the sums printed on your policy schedule against the rule applying that day.
What is longstay.tgia.org and how does it affect my filing?
It is the central system run by the Thai General Insurance Association listing policies issued for long-stay visa applicants. When a Thai insurer issues a policy and records it there, officers can verify the policy online, which removes disputes over forged or cancelled certificates. A policy bought abroad will not appear in that system, so you must instead submit the insurer certification form the notification prescribes.
Must LTR visa insurance be bought in Thailand?
No. The criteria BOI publishes at ltr.boi.go.th allow a health policy with cover of not less than USD 50,000 valid for your stay in Thailand, or proof of Thai social security entitlement covering treatment in Thailand, or a deposit in the amount the criteria specify. A foreign policy is acceptable if it states clearly that treatment inside Thailand is covered and comes with a Thai or English translation.
Do I resubmit insurance at every annual extension of stay?
If you entered on a visa category whose conditions include health cover, the officer will want proof of cover valid for the whole period you are asking to stay. Policies that expire before the requested end date are commonly rejected, so renew so the cover extends past that date and bring the schedule page showing the sums insured, the period and the insured name matching your passport.
Can an insurer void the policy if I did not declare a condition?
Yes. Section 865 of the Civil and Commercial Code makes the contract voidable where the insured knew facts that would have led the insurer to charge a higher premium or to decline the risk and concealed them or made a false statement. The insurer may avoid the contract within one month of learning the ground and within five years of the contract date. Complete the application form yourself and truthfully rather than leaving it to an agent.
What is the limitation period for an insurance claim in Thailand?
Section 882 of the Civil and Commercial Code sets two years from the date of the loss for claiming indemnity, and two years from the due date for claiming premium. If negotiations drag toward the two-year mark, take legal advice on filing suit or on steps that interrupt the limitation period — do not rely on the insurer's internal review alone.
What do waiting periods and pre-existing conditions mean?
Standard health policies exclude conditions existing before cover starts and impose waiting periods for certain groups such as cataract, stones and tumours, all listed in the exclusions section. These terms bind as contract terms so long as they appear in the policy wording approved by the Registrar. Read the schedule and endorsements rather than the marketing leaflet before buying.
If the policy exists in Thai and English, which version governs?
Check the policy itself. Policies issued in Thailand usually state that the Thai text governs, because policy forms and wording require the Registrar's approval under the Life Insurance Act B.E. 2535 and the Non-Life Insurance Act B.E. 2535. Ask for both versions and have a lawyer compare them before signing, especially the exclusions and the definitions of accident and medical necessity.
What documents does a foreign insurer need for treatment received in Thailand?
Normally the insurer's claim form, a medical certificate stating diagnosis and treatment, original receipts with the itemised billing summary, copies of your passport and entry stamp, and a medical record summary on request. Thai-language documents usually need an English translation, and many insurers ask for a certified translation or copies certified by a Notarial Services Attorney.
Does a medical certificate need legalisation at the Department of Consular Affairs?
It depends on the recipient. For a foreign government body or court, the document is usually translated, legalised by the Legalisation Division of the Department of Consular Affairs, then endorsed by the destination country's embassy. For a private insurer, many companies accept a translation certified by the translator or a lawyer. Ask the insurer for its requirement in writing before starting the legalisation route.
Can someone file the claim while the patient is still in hospital?
Yes, with a power of attorney that states the scope: obtaining medical records, submitting the claim, and receiving the cheque or transfer. Attach certified copies of the ID or passport of both the grantor and the attorney. Most hospitals also require a separate consent to disclose patient information, because medical records are sensitive personal data under the personal data protection law.
After a death in Thailand, what do foreign heirs need to claim life cover?
The core pack is the death certificate issued by the district registrar, the hospital's certificate of death, the original policy, evidence of the beneficiary's relationship, and a court order appointing an estate administrator where no beneficiary was named. Thai official documents used abroad must be translated, legalised by the Department of Consular Affairs and then endorsed by the destination country's embassy.
What does compulsory motor insurance cover, and is it required for every vehicle?
The Protection for Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Act B.E. 2535 requires every vehicle owner to maintain cover. Victims receive initial compensation set by the ministerial regulation in force without waiting for fault to be proved, and the balance once liability is established. Those sums are revised periodically, so verify current figures with the OIC at oic.or.th. This cover addresses death and bodily injury, not vehicle repair.
How do voluntary class 1, 2+ and 3+ policies differ?
Class 1 covers damage to your own vehicle even with no other party involved, and includes theft and fire on the stated terms. Class 2+ covers your own vehicle only in a collision with an identified land vehicle and usually includes theft and fire. Class 3+ likewise covers collision with a land vehicle but excludes theft and fire. All classes provide third-party liability up to the sums in the schedule.
Am I covered if I drive on an International Driving Permit and crash?
You are covered if, at the time of driving, you hold a licence valid under Thai law — a Thai licence, or an unexpired International Driving Permit issued under a convention Thailand is party to, together with your home licence. Standard policies exclude driving without a licence or after revocation, and driving over the legal alcohol limit, where the insurer may also recover from the driver.
What paperwork should I keep after a road accident in Thailand?
The police daily record identifying the parties and circumstances, the surveyor's claim slip, photographs of the scene and damage, medical receipts with a medical certificate, and copies of the driving licence and vehicle registration. If the other party is a foreigner or you settle privately, put the settlement in writing in both languages to prevent later disputes.
What travel insurance does a Schengen visa require?
Schengen consulates require travel medical insurance covering emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation, and repatriation or return of remains, with cover of at least EUR 30,000 valid throughout the territory of all Schengen States for the whole requested stay. The policy should name the traveller exactly as in the passport and cover the outbound and return dates.
I bought travel insurance and then changed my flights — must the policy change?
Tell the insurer and obtain an endorsement amending the dates. If the cover period does not match the actual travel dates, a consulate may treat the file as incomplete, and an incident outside the period can be declined. Add at least a day of cover before departure and after return to absorb delays and connections.
Can older travellers or people with chronic illness buy travel cover?
Yes, though many plans cap the insured age and exclude treatment arising from pre-existing conditions. Read the exclusions and look for plans offering a chronic-condition extension. Carry a medication list and an English-language medical certificate, because the insurer's assistance centre will ask for clinical details before approving cashless treatment abroad.
How do I claim for flight delay and lost baggage?
You need airline evidence: a written delay confirmation, or a property irregularity report issued at the airport, plus boarding passes, baggage tags and receipts for necessary expenses incurred while waiting. The policy sets a minimum delay in hours and per-item caps in its schedule, so keep every receipt and notify within the reporting deadline stated in the conditions.
Must foreign employees register for Thai social security?
A foreign employee working lawfully for an employer within the scheme must be registered as an insured person under section 33 just like a Thai employee. The employer must register the employee within the statutory period and remit contributions. Insured persons receive the statutory benefits — sickness, maternity, invalidity, death, child allowance, old age and unemployment. See sso.go.th for details.
How do I keep social security cover after leaving a job?
You may apply as a voluntary insured person under section 39 if you were previously insured under section 33 and paid the required contributions. The application must be filed within the statutory period after your insured status ends and contributions must continue; missing contributions beyond the stated threshold terminates the status. Apply at a provincial Social Security Office or through sso.go.th.
Can social security replace private health insurance?
Not entirely. Social security ties you to the hospital named on your entitlement card and to its referral rules, whereas private cover offers wider hospital choice and room benefits by plan. Many people run both. Note that some visa criteria accept proof of Thai social security covering treatment in Thailand in place of a policy, so read the criteria for your visa case by case.
When can I change the hospital on my social security card?
The Social Security Office opens a window each year for insured persons to select or change their contracted hospital, and also allows changes for good cause such as moving home or workplace. File the selection form at a provincial Social Security Office or online via sso.go.th. In an emergency you may attend the nearest facility under the applicable rules.
Why does the bank require fire insurance on a mortgaged condo?
Lenders normally make it a loan condition that the borrower insures the mortgaged property against fire for the loan term and names the bank as beneficiary to the extent of its interest, protecting the security. You may choose any insurer licensed by the Registrar rather than only the bank's nominee, provided the cover meets the loan conditions.
Does the condominium juristic person's policy cover contents in my unit?
Usually not. That policy is aimed at common property and the building structure as described in its schedule. Contents, fit-out you added, and liability for water escaping into other units are for the unit owner to insure. Ask the manager for a copy of the common-area schedule so you can see the gap before choosing your own plan.
Should a landlord renting to foreigners carry third-party liability cover?
It is prudent, because an owner can be liable for damage caused by defects in the building or its equipment under the tort provisions of the Civil and Commercial Code. Liability cover funds indemnity and defence costs up to the stated limit. Spell out in the lease who maintains what, and require the tenant to insure their own belongings separately.
Can a foreigner be named as beneficiary on a Thai policy?
Yes; life policies place no nationality limit on beneficiaries. Write the name exactly as in the passport and state the relationship and date of birth to avoid identification problems at claim time. Where the beneficiary is abroad, identity documents and a power of attorney executed overseas must be notarised and then legalised by a Royal Thai Embassy or through the process the recipient requires.
The insurer declined my claim — what should I do first?
Ask for the refusal in writing with the reason and the policy clause relied on, then compare it against the schedule's conditions and exclusions. Appeal internally with further evidence such as your treating doctor's opinion. If that fails, complain to the OIC. Keep dated copies of every exchange: they are evidence and they help you manage the two-year limitation period in section 882.
How do I complain to the OIC, and does it cost anything?
Complain through the OIC hotline 1186, the online channel at oic.or.th, or in person at the OIC head office or a regional or provincial office. There is no fee for the complainant. Attach the policy, the insurer's refusal, medical or loss evidence and a timeline of contacts. Officers will call the parties to explain and mediate under the applicable regulations.
When is OIC insurance arbitration a good option?
It suits disputes where the facts are clear but the parties read the policy wording differently and you want a faster, cheaper route than litigation. The policyholder elects to refer the dispute under the OIC arbitration regulations, and the award binds under the arbitration legislation. Take legal advice before choosing arbitration over court.
What does suing an insurer in a Thai court involve, and in what language?
Proceedings are in Thai; foreign-language documents need certified translations, and the court arranges an interpreter where a party does not understand Thai. Key evidence is the policy and endorsements, the application form, the refusal letter, medical records and premium payment proof. Many insurance disputes qualify as consumer cases, whose procedure is lighter on the consumer than ordinary civil procedure.
Must visa health insurance be bought from a Thai insurer?
Not in every case, but for visas where officers verify the policy through longstay.tgia.org they generally expect a policy from a participating insurer. Foreign policies are sometimes accepted with an English confirmation of benefits stating limits and cover dates as required by the applicable notification. Confirm with the embassy or Immigration office handling your file before buying.
How must a foreign policy be translated and certified for filing?
If it is not in English, translate it into Thai or English and certify the translation as the receiving authority requires. Some offices accept only a confirmation of benefits on insurer letterhead signed by an authorised officer. For court or other official use, signature certification and an Apostille at origin may be needed.
Must insurance cover the entire extension period for a retirement visa?
Yes. Officers compare the policy start and end dates against the permitted stay. If cover ends before the permission expires the file is usually returned for correction, so it is safer to buy cover slightly longer than the requested period.
How do pre-existing conditions affect cover?
Most health policies exclude conditions existing before the cover start date, or cover them only after a stated waiting period. Failing to disclose health facts in the application can allow the insurer to avoid the contract under the Civil and Commercial Code. Disclose accurately and keep a copy of your application.
What documents are needed to reclaim Thai treatment costs from a foreign insurer?
Typically original itemised receipts, a medical report or discharge summary signed by the physician with their licence number, and copies of your passport and entry stamp. If the insurer requires certified documents, an English translation certified by the Department of Consular Affairs may be needed.
What travel insurance limit does a Schengen visa require?
EU rules require travel insurance covering emergency medical treatment and repatriation of not less than EUR 30,000, valid in all Schengen states for the whole stay. Check the specific embassy's requirements, as some prescribe an additional certificate format.
Should I buy insurance before or after the visa is granted?
For visas where the policy is a required supporting document, it must exist before filing. Many insurers offer premium refund or start-date deferral if the visa is refused — check that clause before paying.
Can an employer group health plan be used for visa and work permit filings?
Often yes, with a letter from the insurer or employer naming the insured, the cover limits and the period. However, visa categories with a prescribed statutory minimum must match that limit exactly, otherwise a top-up policy is required.
What is the difference between compulsory and voluntary motor insurance?
Compulsory insurance under the 1992 Protection for Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Act covers bodily injury to victims up to statutory limits and is required for annual tax renewal. Voluntary cover (classes 1-3) covers property and own-vehicle damage per the policy. They are complementary, not alternatives.
Where can I complain if an insurer denies a claim?
File with the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC), which operates a hotline and an insurance dispute mediation process; attach the policy, the denial letter and medical evidence. If mediation fails, a consumer case can still be filed in court.
What health cover is required for a Non-O-A extension of stay, and are foreign policies accepted?
Applicants must show a policy covering treatment in Thailand at the sums announced and in force on the filing date, for both outpatient and inpatient treatment. Thai insurers in the central scheme issue certificates that immigration can verify instantly. Foreign policies are accepted when the insurer issues the prescribed certification form stating the sums insured and a coverage period spanning the requested extension, with an English or Thai translation. Many immigration offices also ask the insured to sign every page of the copies.
How does LTR visa insurance differ from Non-O-A requirements?
Long-term resident visa conditions state the cover in US dollars and allow a deposit of the specified amount as an alternative to a policy, whereas Non-O-A extensions follow announcements denominated in Thai baht and require cover for treatment in Thailand throughout the period requested. Check that the insured name matches the passport exactly, that the coverage period overlaps the permitted stay, and that the certificate expressly confirms treatment in Thailand is covered.
What must a travel policy contain for a Schengen visa application?
Schengen consulates apply a common standard: emergency medical cover of at least EUR 30,000, valid throughout the Schengen area, including emergency medical evacuation and repatriation including in case of death, and a validity period covering the whole requested stay with a margin before and after travel. The certificate should be in English, quote the policy number and the insured name as in the passport, and confirm the sum insured in euros.
Can an insurer void the contract over an undisclosed pre-existing condition?
Under the Civil and Commercial Code an insurance contract is voidable where the insured knew and concealed a material fact that would have led the insurer to charge a higher premium or decline the risk. The insurer must exercise avoidance within one month of learning of the ground and in any case within five years of the contract date. Beyond those limits, or where the insured genuinely did not know the fact at the time, avoidance is improper. Ask for the reasons in writing and keep medical records showing the first date of diagnosis.
A claim was declined — where can a complaint be filed and how long does it take?
First obtain a written declination citing the policy clause and reasons, then use the insurer's complaints channel. If unresolved, complain to the Office of Insurance Commission through the 1186 hotline or the online intake, attaching the policy, the declination letter, treatment records and receipts. The Office operates mediation and arbitration procedures that are faster and cheaper than litigation. The general limitation period for suing on an insurance contract is two years from the date of loss.
What is the difference between class 1, 2+ and 3 motor cover, and what does compulsory insurance cover?
Compulsory insurance under the Road Accident Victims Protection Act covers death and bodily injury of accident victims only, never the vehicle. Voluntary class 1 covers the insured's own vehicle even at fault and includes theft and fire. Class 2+ covers own damage only in a collision with an identified land vehicle. Class 3 covers third-party liability only. The right choice depends on the value of the vehicle and the risk the owner can absorb.
Must foreigners working in Thailand join social security, and what benefits apply?
Foreign employees working lawfully for a registered employer must be enrolled under section 33 on the same basis as Thai employees. The employer registers them within the statutory period and remits contributions jointly with the employee. Benefits cover sickness, maternity, invalidity, death, child allowance, unemployment and old age. After leaving employment, a person who has contributed as required may continue voluntarily under section 39 within six months. Self-employed people may join under section 40 in the benefit package they select.
How can a departing foreigner claim social security old-age benefits?
An insured person who has ceased insured status and meets the statutory conditions may claim old-age benefits by filing the benefit application with a passport copy, evidence that insured status ended, and bank account details. Those who have already left Thailand usually appoint a representative in Thailand, and a power of attorney signed abroad must go through signature certification and legalisation before it can be used.
What documents are needed to claim Thai treatment costs from a foreign insurer?
Typically a medical certificate stating the diagnosis and treatment dates, a medical summary or discharge summary, original itemised receipts, and the insurer's claim form signed by the treating doctor. Insurers abroad usually require a certified English translation, and in some cases legalisation by the Department of Consular Affairs or that country's embassy. Photocopy every receipt before sending originals.
The patient cannot sign — can a relative handle the claim?
Hospitals and insurers generally require a power of attorney stating clearly that the attorney may request medical records, sign claim forms and receive claim proceeds, with signed copies of both parties' identity documents or passports. If the principal is abroad, the mandate must be signed before a notary public or Thai consular officer and pass through the certification chain first. Where the patient is unconscious, proof of relationship and the hospital's own procedure apply case by case.
Does a condominium owner need separate fire insurance if common fees are paid?
The juristic person's policy covers common property and the building structure as scheduled, but not contents inside the unit, owner-installed fit-out, or in some cases liability to neighbouring units. Owners with a mortgage are usually required to hold fire insurance naming the lender as beneficiary. Read the juristic person's policy schedule before deciding how much additional cover to buy.
Are floods and natural perils covered by property policies in Thailand?
Standard residential fire policies usually include natural perils — flood, windstorm, earthquake and hail — within a limited annual sub-limit. Higher limits require an extension. Check exclusions relating to water level, high-risk zones and any waiting period after inception, and keep photographs and valuation documents of the property in advance to support a claim.
Does a small business need third-party liability cover?
Businesses that receive customers on their premises — restaurants, clinics, tutoring schools and accommodation — face claims arising from accidents on site. Third-party liability cover responds to death, bodily injury and property damage of others up to the sum insured, including defence costs subject to conditions. Set the limit by reference to daily footfall and the nature of the hazard. Many shopping-centre leases already require tenants to hold this cover.
The policy does not match what the agent promised — what can be done?
A newly issued policy can be cancelled within the free-look period stated in the conditions, counted from receipt, with premium refunded under the applicable rules. After that period, gather evidence of the sales presentation — chat messages, sales material and call records — and file with the insurer and the Office of Insurance Commission, which licenses agents and brokers. Verify a seller's licence status before signing anything.
Which time limits matter most in Thai insurance matters?
The common ones are notifying the insurer without delay as the policy requires, submitting claim documents within each policy's deadline, the insurer's right to avoid the contract within one month of learning the ground and no later than five years from inception, and the two-year limitation period for suing on an insurance contract from the date of loss. Claims for initial compensation under the Road Accident Victims Protection Act have their own separate deadline. Record the incident date and every filing date.
How should beneficiaries be named in a life policy to avoid problems at claim time?
State full names as in official documents, the relationship, and the share for each person, with shares totalling the whole benefit, and update the nomination when family circumstances change. Where no beneficiary is named, proceeds fall into the estate and cannot be released until an estate administrator is appointed by court order, which takes far longer. Foreign policyholders should check that spellings match the passport to avoid identity verification problems.
What health insurance coverage does a Non-O retirement extension require?
For applications filed inside Thailand the current rule requires inpatient cover of at least 400,000 baht and outpatient cover of at least 40,000 baht per year, from an insurer listed in the Immigration Bureau verification system. The document officers accept is the certificate printed from that system, not just the policy schedule. Requirements are applied slightly differently by each immigration office, so confirm locally before renewal.
Can an O-A visa applicant use a foreign insurer?
Yes, provided the policy meets the stated limits and the insurer signs the official Foreign Insurance Certificate confirming cover for the whole period of stay in Thailand. In practice Thai embassies scrutinise that form more than the policy itself, so ask the insurer to complete the official wording before submitting the application.
What insurance does the LTR visa require?
LTR applicants must show health insurance with at least USD 50,000 of cover valid for a minimum of ten months from the application date, or alternatively a deposit that meets the BOI criteria. Foreign policies are acceptable when they clearly state coverage inside Thailand, and each dependant needs cover in their own name.
How are pre-existing conditions treated under Thai health policies?
Standard OIC approved health policies exclude conditions existing before the policy started and impose waiting periods, commonly 120 days for conditions such as tumours and stones. Applicants must disclose their medical history truthfully: non-disclosure allows the insurer to void the contract within two years of inception under the Civil and Commercial Code and to refuse the claim.
What can I do if an insurer refuses to pay a claim in Thailand?
Complain to the Office of Insurance Commission on hotline 1186 or through its online complaint system, attaching the policy, receipts, medical records and the insurer's refusal letter. The OIC offers mediation and arbitration at no cost to the policyholder. Consumer court proceedings, which are exempt from court fees in many cases, are the last step rather than the first.
Does travel insurance satisfy Thai long stay visa requirements?
Usually not. Travel policies are designed for short visits, cover emergency treatment and repatriation, and are typically capped at 180 days, while long stay visa rules require specified inpatient and outpatient limits from a recognised insurer. Applicants planning a retirement or long stay visa should buy a long stay health policy that is already inside the immigration verification system.
Can I use a health policy bought abroad for a Thai visa application?
Often yes, but officers usually require an English confirmation letter naming the insured, showing coverage dates that span the whole permitted stay, inpatient and outpatient limits, and an explicit statement that treatment in Thailand is covered. Documents in other languages need a certified Thai or English translation, and some checkpoints also ask for legalisation by the Department of Consular Affairs. Our advisers review the wording against the exact checkpoint requirements before you file.
What is the difference between travel insurance and long-stay health insurance here?
Travel insurance is built for short trips and focuses on accidents, emergency treatment and baggage. Long-stay health insurance covers ordinary illness and inpatient care at the limits set by Thai authorities. Long-stay applications therefore usually reject travel policies even with higher limits, because the coverage period does not span the requested permission to stay.
If I already pay Thai social security, do I still need private health insurance for my visa?
Section 33 insured employees can support some applications with a certificate from the Social Security Office, but retirement-category applications and any category with a statutory minimum limit still need a qualifying policy. Confirm with the office where you file, because local practice differs.
Will a pre-existing condition cause my visa application to fail?
The condition itself is not disqualifying. The risk is an exclusion that leaves effective coverage below the required limit, or wording that excludes inpatient care entirely. Choose a plan that accepts the risk after a waiting period, or attach a doctor's letter showing the condition is controlled together with proof of remaining coverage.
What should foreigners watch out for with Thai motor insurance?
Compulsory insurance under the Protection for Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Act covers only bodily injury within limited sums and never the vehicle. Voluntary cover must list the actual drivers; if a driver holds a foreign licence that is not recognised under the applicable convention, the insurer may refuse the claim. Translate and certify the licence or convert it to a Thai licence first.
My insurer refused a claim. How do I escalate it in Thailand?
Ask for a written refusal citing the policy clause, collect receipts, medical records and correspondence, then file with the Office of Insurance Commission hotline 1186 or a regional office for mediation. If mediation fails, arbitration or a consumer court claim follows. All foreign-language evidence needs certified translation.
Can an instalment-payment policy be used for a visa extension?
Yes, if the certificate states the policy is in force for the entire period of stay requested, not only the instalment already paid. If the verification system shows only the paid period, prepay enough instalments before filing so coverage is never shorter than the permission sought.
Do dependants need separate policies or is a family plan enough?
A family plan is acceptable, but the certificate must show each insured person by name with individual limits rather than a combined family sum, because officers check per-person coverage. If the system issues only a combined certificate, request individual certificates as well.
What do I need to claim treatment I already paid for overseas?
Original receipts, an itemised bill, a doctor's letter stating the diagnosis and treatment dates, and travel evidence for that period. Foreign-language documents need certified translation, and some insurers require certification by an authority in the treating country. Watch the filing window, commonly 30 to 90 days from treatment.
My old policy expires while the visa decision is pending. Is that a problem?
It is a common cause of rejection, because coverage must run continuously from the filing date to the end of the permitted stay. The safe approach is to renew or buy a new policy effective before filing and submit the new certificate in place of the old one.
How can I verify that an insurer is properly licensed in Thailand?
Check the licensed-company database of the Office of Insurance Commission or call 1186. For long-stay applications also confirm the insurer appears in the verification system used by immigration, since a licensed insurer outside that system may force you to submit extra evidence.
I would rather not compare policies and prepare paperwork myself. How can your team help?
Our advisory team has handled foreigner documentation and applications for more than 15 years. We start from the exact rules of the office you will file with, review the policy wording clause by clause, assemble the file with certified translations and any required legalisation, and can file on your behalf. If a dispute with the insurer arises we draft the correspondence and liaise with the regulator. Contact us by phone or LINE for a case assessment.
Before you start
- Always read the minimum sums insured from the notification in force on your filing date; the Non-O-A and LTR figures have been revised more than once.
- Buying from an insurer licensed in Thailand and recorded in longstay.tgia.org lets officers verify the policy online immediately.
- Renew so the cover extends beyond the last day of the stay you request — an early expiry is the most common reason files are returned.
- Complete the application form yourself and declare your medical history truthfully so the contract cannot be avoided under section 865.
- Keep original receipts, the itemised billing summary and the medical certificate, and ask for English versions on the day of discharge.
- Obtain the claim refusal in writing, citing the policy clause relied on, before complaining or litigating.
- Diary the two-year limitation period in section 882; do not let the insurer's internal review run it down.
- Separate what the condominium juristic person's policy covers from what your own unit policy must cover.
Cautions and common rejection causes
- Relying on old figures for the sum insured and finding the notification in force requires more on the filing day.
- Buying foreign cover that does not state clearly that treatment inside Thailand is covered.
- Letting an agent complete the application unread, leaving a false statement about medical history on file.
- Assuming compulsory motor insurance pays for vehicle repairs when it covers death and bodily injury only.
- Driving without a licence valid under Thai law, or over the legal alcohol limit, both standard policy exclusions.
- Changing travel dates without obtaining an endorsement amending the cover period.
- Treating social security as a full substitute for private cover despite the contracted-hospital and referral rules.
- Naming a beneficiary whose name does not match the passport, or omitting the relationship, which complicates the claim.
We pre-check files to reduce the chance of rejection; the receiving authority alone decides acceptance.
