When You Need MFA Legalization
Any Thai-issued document destined for a foreign government, court, university, or registry office almost always needs to be authenticated by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The MFA stamp confirms that the issuing authority's signature and seal are genuine — without it, the document has no legal weight abroad.

How the Chain Works
Each step is a separate office with its own queue, fee schedule, opening hours, and document requirements. Doing it yourself typically requires 2–3 trips to Bangkok across 1–2 weeks. We compress the whole chain into a single managed workflow from Phuket.
Step 1 — Notarization or Translation: If the document is in Thai but going abroad, it must be translated by a certified translator. If it is in English but going to a non-English-speaking authority, it must be translated to the destination language. Notarization may also be required as the first authentication.
Step 2 — MFA Consular Department (Chaengwattana): The MFA verifies the signature of the issuing authority or notary and affixes its stamp. Government fee THB 200 (standard, 2 working days) or THB 800 (express, same-day).
Step 3 — Destination Embassy in Bangkok: The embassy verifies the MFA stamp and affixes its own authentication. Fees vary widely (US ~USD 50, UK ~£30, Germany ~€30, Australia ~AUD 80). Some embassies require pre-booking.
Step 4 — From 2026 — Apostille: Once Thailand fully implements the Hague Apostille Convention (target 28 February 2027), the embassy step is replaced by a single MFA-issued Apostille for documents going to any of the 120+ member states. We are already structuring chains so they can be re-routed without re-doing the document.
Common Embassy-Specific Routes from Phuket
USA: Translation + Notary + MFA + US Embassy Bangkok. Required for I-130, K-1, CR-1, Green Card.
UK: Translation + MFA + UK Embassy (limited service since 2014 — most documents now accepted with MFA only).
Germany / Austria / Switzerland: Sworn translation in destination country + MFA + German/Austrian/Swiss Embassy Bangkok.
Australia / New Zealand: NAATI translation + MFA only (embassy step not required for most visa categories).
China: Translation + MFA + Chinese Embassy Bangkok. Required for marriage in China, business visa, work permit.
UAE / Saudi Arabia / Qatar: Arabic translation + MFA + GCC embassy. Multiple stamps for medical, marriage, and education documents.
What the 2026 Apostille Means for You
Thailand signed the Hague Apostille Convention in 2024 and is rolling out implementation across 28 February 2027. Once live, a single Apostille issued by the MFA replaces the embassy authentication step for any of the 120+ member countries (US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Australia, NZ, Japan, Korea, India, Mexico, Brazil, most of the EU).
Practical impact: a chain that used to take 7–10 days and cost THB 6,000–8,000 will take 3–5 days and cost THB 2,500–4,000. We are issuing Apostille-compatible notarizations and translations now, so any document we produce in 2025 will not need to be redone after the changeover.

Then it only needs Apostille from the issuing country plus a Thai translation here — we handle the Thailand-side translation and any local notarization.

What is the difference between certification, legalization, and Apostille?+
Certification confirms a translation is accurate. Legalization confirms the signature on the document is genuine via a chain of authorities. Apostille is a single, internationally recognized version of legalization under the Hague Convention.
Who actually signs off at MFA?+
The Legalisation Division of the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Chaeng Watthana, Bangkok). It certifies the seal and signature on the Thai document or the translator's signature — not the content. Official counters, fees and queue rules are published at consular.mfa.go.th.
Which documents get rejected most often at the counter?+
Photocopies instead of freshly certified extracts from the issuing office; extracts older than the 3–6 months the destination accepts; name transliteration that does not match the passport; documents unstapled and restapled so the seal no longer bridges the pages; and translations of Thai agency names that do not use the official English wording.
Do I still need MFA once Thailand's apostille is live?+
Yes for the underlying step — the same MFA division issues the apostille. What changes is only the final layer: for Hague member states the apostille replaces the destination-embassy stamp; for non-member states the legacy MFA + embassy chain continues.
