Best Amphur to Marry in Thailand — Bangkok vs Phuket vs Pattaya vs Chiang Mai (2026)

The five-document base file you need at every amphur

Before comparing amphurs, get the base file right. Every district office in Thailand asks for the same five documents from the foreign spouse, regardless of location.

• Affirmation of Freedom to Marry (or Statutory Declaration of Single Status) issued by your embassy in Bangkok — typically same-day if you book online, costs USD 30 to 50
• Thai translation of the Affirmation by a recognized translator — typically THB 800 to 1,500
• MFA Consular legalization of the Thai translation — THB 200 standard or THB 800 express at Chaengwattana
• Passport (original plus 2 copies of the photo page and current Thai entry stamp)
• Two witnesses with Thai ID cards or foreign passports (the amphur usually does NOT provide witnesses — bring your own or arrange via lawyer)

Phuket — Mueang Phuket Amphur (Phuket Town)

The flagship amphur for the entire Phuket province, located on Narisorn Road in Phuket Town. Senior officers speak conversational English, registration counters open 08:30 to 16:30 Monday to Friday, and same-day completion is achievable if you arrive before 14:00 with a complete file. Approximately 12 to 18 Thai-foreigner marriages registered per week.

Phuket Town is the recommended choice for couples residing in Phuket because the registered Khor.Ror.2 and Khor.Ror.3 are issued in the same office on the same afternoon. Foreign spouses then carry the certificates directly to a translation firm in Phuket for translation back into English (paradoxically, you need this for your home country embassy reporting).

On those peak dates, queues form at 04:00 and registration can take 4–6 hours.

Outside of auspicious dates, Bang Rak is a smooth registration. Several counter officers are fluent in English, and the amphur provides bilingual marriage certificates as standard (most amphurs only provide Thai). The certificate is the same legal artifact regardless of amphur, but Bang Rak's bilingual version saves a translation step for embassy reporting.

Bang Lamung is the right choice for couples residing in Pattaya, Sattahip or Sri Racha. Walk-in is accepted but mid-morning slots fill quickly. Same-day registration is standard. Embassies of choice (UK, Germany, Russia) all have consular agents who can deliver Affirmations directly to Bang Rak/Sukhumvit-based law firms, who then handle the MFA legalization and bring the file to Bang Lamung.

Outside the big four, many smaller amphurs will happily register a Thai-foreigner marriage but expect everything in Thai. We recommend these only if the Thai spouse is from the local area and a Thai lawyer is accompanying.

• Krabi Town — limited English, but accepts foreign documents with Thai translations
