Using Qualifications for Professional Licensing

Professional councils in Thailand and abroad that verify qualifications and certificates of good standing — Medical Council, Nursing Council, Council of Engineers, Architect Council — and which documents need legalisation.

After a credential evaluation, is MFA legalisation still needed?

It depends on the recipient. An evaluation report is the evaluator's own document, not a certification of a Thai public document. Government bodies and professional councils frequently ask for the legalised qualification alongside the report, so it is efficient to prepare both in parallel.

What does a Thai nurse need to work abroad?

The usual set is the degree certificate and transcript, the nursing licence from the Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council and a certificate of good standing from that Council, all legalised by the Department of Consular Affairs. Some regulators additionally require the Council to send verification directly to them.

What is a certificate of good standing?

It is a letter from your professional council confirming that your licence is current, is not suspended or revoked, and carries no disciplinary record. Foreign regulators commonly accept it only if issued within three to six months, so request it close to the filing date.

How can a foreign-trained doctor or dentist obtain a Thai licence?

By applying for curriculum recognition and sitting the examinations set by the Medical Council or the Dental Council, filing the degree and transcript legalised by the issuing country's embassy or apostillised as required, together with a certified Thai translation. The steps and examination subjects follow that council's own announcements.

How portable are engineering and architecture qualifications?

The Council of Engineers and the Architect Council of Thailand set their own degree-recognition and licensing examinations. The ASEAN mutual recognition arrangements allow registration as an ASEAN Engineer or ASEAN Architect, but you must still register with the professional council of the country where you will practise, and every qualification document must be legalised.

How far do short-course or vocational certificates count abroad?

They count as supporting evidence rather than a principal qualification, and their weight depends on whether the issuer is accredited — for example an institution under the Ministry of Education, the Department of Skill Development, or a professional council. Prepare the original certificate, evidence of the syllabus and contact hours, and a certified translation; ask the issuer for a course confirmation letter setting out content and hours, then translate and legalise as the destination requires. Certificates from unaccredited providers are usually not counted in credential evaluation, so always attach the syllabus so the assessor can see the actual content.
